Music

'Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity.' (The National Curriculum)

At Hallwood Park we intend to foster a life-long love of music through high quality music education that engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.

Provision - Our Teaching and Learning

In the Foundation Stage, children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. This splits areas of learning and development into three 'prime' areas and four 'specific' areas. Music is covered under 'Expressive Arts and Design' which is a specific area of learning.

Throughout their time in the Early Years children will have the opportunity to:

  •  Sing a range of well-known nursery rhymes and songs.
  • Perform songs, rhymes, poems and stories with others, and (when appropriate) try to move in time with music. They will use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques.

In Key Stage 1, and in accordance with the new National Curriculum, children will have the opportunity to:

  • Use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes.
  • Play tunes and untuned instruments musically
  • Listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high quality live and recorded music
  • Experiment with, create, create select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music.

In Key Stage 2, children will have the opportunity to:

  • play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression.
  • Improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the inter-related dimensions of music.
  • Listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory.
  • Use and understand staff and other musical notation
  • Appreciate and understand a wide range of high quality live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians.
  • Develop an understanding of the history of music.
