Design Technology

Design and Technology involves applying knowledge and skills when designing and making products. The activities undertaken will enable our children to consider the needs of individuals and society within a caring community. Undertaking Design and Technology activities in school will also give children opportunities to use a range of materials and processes and to work independently as well as part of a team.

Here at Hallwood Park we aim to make Design and Technology an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination our pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Our pupils learn how to take risks and innovative. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life in the wider world.

Provision – Our Teaching and Learning

In the Foundation stage, children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. This splits areas of learning and development into three ‘prime’ areas and four ‘specific’ areas. Design and Technology is covered under ‘Expressive Arts & Design’ which is a ‘specific’ area of learning.

Throughout their time in the Early Years children will have the opportunity to:

  • Use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques
  • Experiment with colour, design, texture, form and function
  • Use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes.
  • Represent their own ideas through design and technology

In Key Stages 1 and 2, and in accordance with the new National Curriculum, children will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop imaginative thinking and talk about what they like and dislike when designing and making things
  • Talk about how things work , and to draw and model their own ideas
  • Select appropriate tools and techniques for making a product, whilst following safe procedures
  • Explore attitudes towards the made world and how we live and work within it
  • Develop an understanding of technological processes and products, their manufacture and their contribution to our society
  • Foster enjoyment, satisfaction and purpose in designing and making things
  • Develop the cross-curricular use of design and technology in other subjects
