Personal Development at Hallwood Park Primary School
At Hallwood Park Primary School, Personal Development runs as a golden thread through all aspects of school life. In our context, where many pupils have limited experiences beyond their immediate community, it is essential that we provide rich opportunities to broaden horizons, raise aspirations and build the knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in life.
Our Personal Development offer is designed to build pupils’ cultural capital, ensuring they develop the understanding, skills and experiences required for life in modern Britain.
These elements work together to provide a coherent, layered approach, ensuring all pupils are supported, challenged and given opportunities to succeed.
Universal Support
Our universal provision ensures that all pupils develop the skills, behaviours and attitudes needed to succeed.
This includes:
- PSHE lessons and safeguarding curriculum
- Assemblies
- Oracy and communication development
- Equality, diversity and inclusion (including protected characteristics)
- Zones of Regulation
- Pupil leadership and play leaders
Universal provision is designed to develop pupils as individuals and leaders. We recognise the strong links between oracy, wellbeing and confidence, and ensure all pupils leave school as resilient, responsible young people.
Targeted Support
We recognise that many pupils at Hallwood Park require additional support to overcome barriers.
We take a bespoke approach, providing:
- THRIVE and pastoral support
- Mental Health Support Team (MHST)
- Family Connectors and external agencies
- Parental engagement and support
- Individual and small-group interventions
Support is carefully tailored to ensure every child can reach their full potential.
Curriculum (PSHE, Safeguarding and Personal Development)
The curriculum is a key driver of Personal Development at Hallwood Park.
PSHE, including Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE), is delivered through the SCARF curriculum, supported by additional teaching to respond to the needs of our pupils.
Our curriculum is:
- sequenced and progressive, building knowledge over time
- responsive to safeguarding trends, particularly mental health, online safety and community risks
- focused on both knowledge and life skills
Pupils learn about:
- relationships, respect and diversity (including protected characteristics)
- physical and mental health and wellbeing
- staying safe in school, at home, online and in the community
- rights, responsibilities and active citizenship
- managing change, including puberty and transition
The curriculum also supports pupils to develop aspirations and an understanding of future careers and opportunities.
Assemblies
Assemblies are a core component of Personal Development and reinforce key curriculum learning
They are carefully planned to:
- revisit key PSHE themes
- respond directly to safeguarding priorities
- develop pupils’ character and values
Assemblies are organised around five key strands:
- Safeguarding awareness and reminders
- Character development (linked to STRIVE values)
- Equality and inclusion
- Relationships and behaviour
- Health and wellbeing
This ensures that key messages are regularly revisited and remain relevant to pupils’ needs.
Extra-Curricular Opportunities
At Hallwood Park, we understand that pupils need access to a broad range of experiences to develop their interests and aspirations.
We provide:
- after-school clubs
- educational visits and trips
- school-based events and performances
- sporting opportunities
- citizenship and community engagement
We prioritise accessibility, ensuring all pupils can take part by keeping costs low and removing barriers to participation.
These opportunities are designed to provide maximum exposure to the wider world, particularly for pupils who may have limited opportunities beyond their local area.
Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development
Personal Development supports pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
Pupils are given opportunities to:
- reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences
- understand right and wrong
- develop positive relationships
- learn about different cultures and communities
